How the area took shape
Barking Abbey was founded around AD 666 and became a major religious institution. The surviving remains include parts of the medieval complex, while the Curfew Tower is an important landmark beside the former abbey precinct. The town grew around the abbey, with trade and a market becoming part of its identity.
Local character
The centre gives Barking a clear point of arrival, but the name covers more than the streets immediately around the station. A property advertised as Barking may have a different relationship to the town centre, River Roding or wider riverside developments. Compare the exact location before drawing conclusions about daily convenience.
Everyday life & places to explore
The abbey grounds and East Street offer a useful first introduction to the town’s historic and commercial sides. Take a route that includes both the station and the streets around the abbey. If you are considering a home farther away, repeat the exercise from that address rather than assuming the same shops and services are equally convenient.
Getting around
Barking station combines District and Hammersmith & City services with the Suffragette line and National Rail. Barking Riverside is a separate station. Check which one a property is near, along with the complete journey to the places you regularly visit.
